Written in the Land: The Life of Queenie McKenzie

This beautifully produced book tells the story of Queenie McKenzie, a remarkable indigenous woman from the East Kimberley in Western Australia. Now deceased, Queenie was an important cultural leader, revered Aboriginal Law person and internationally acclaimed artist.

From Cooee Aboriginal Art:

This stunning book on the most revered and beloved Gija elder has been released on the tenth anniversary of her passing. It was written by Jennifer Joi Field and based on research by Dr. Patricia Vinnicombe, with the participation of the senior women of Warmun community. A most fitting tribute to a great artist it was launched last week at the National Museum of Australia, by Jenny Maklin. In a deeply moving event six Gija women, led by Peggy Patrick and Shirley Purdie, danced before drawing Jenny Maklin in to an embrace during which all cried in remembrance of a dearly departed and respected friend.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who loves Queenie McKenzie’s paintings, or is simply devoted to Aboriginal people, their culture and their art.
