Blood dots a clue to Aboriginal painting heist

Dots of blood could help police catch two thieves who stole seven Aboriginal paintings worth more than half a million dollars from a museum in Darwin.

The blood spots, as well as fingerprints and video footage, have given detectives “strong leads” on the identity of the robbers, who used a rock to smash a rear window at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory shortly before 4.30am (CST) today.

Fifteen minutes later they fled the scene with six Papunya Tula board paintings and a central Australian watercolour. A number of captions were also removed.

Ms Malgorzewicz told reporters the paintings were worth in excess of half a million dollars and that once she realised the break-in was not an April Fool’s joke she “felt shocked”.
